Sri Lanka sends world record backstage team to South Africa

27 December, 2020

Sri Lanka may have entered the book of world records with an unprecedented 32 member contingent sent to South Africa for just two cricket Tests.

Crowding, over-crowding and social distancing means nothing to Sri Lanka Cricket as long as they can tell the Media you cannot enter the Press Box and report on the action like it happened at the LPL and now likely to be the same at the home Test series against England in Galle.

At the LPL there were wives and children and up to a hundred invitees at the venue in Hambantota some of them office-bearers of Sri Lanka Cricket on an all-expenses paid holiday.

The 11 officials sent to South Africa at Sri Lanka Cricket expenses are so-called head coach Mickey Arthur, head selector and manager Ashantha de Mel, bowling coach David Saker, batting coach Andy Flower, fielding coach Shane Mcdermott, physiotherapist Ajantha Wattegama, trainer Dilshan Fonseka, masseur Roshan Priyadharshana, computer analyst GT Niroshan and two medical officers.

Missing from the backstage team are a running-between-the-wickets coach, diet coach, dressing coach, travel coach and media coach.

Questions have also been raised on what Mickey Arthur’s role is when there are three coaches for batting, bowling and fielding although there is a vacancy for a running-between-the-wickets coach.
