A soldier was killed and two soldiers were severely injured when a private bus which was speeding to overtake another private bus collided head-on with their jeep on High Level Road near the Nugegoda flyover yesterday morning. Godage Lalith, 35, from Wathurawala, Nindana, Ambalangoda died in the crash.

The driver of the private bus is in remand custody, HQI of Mirihana Police Suminda Saranaguptha said.

The collision had taken place at about 5.30 am. The army jeep was being driven by Godage Lalith on duty from Colombo to Panagoda Army camp in Homagama.

The jeep he was in was hit by the private bus, which pulled out to catch the bus that was running in front. “It was a case of a 122- route bus plying between Avissawella and Pettah, attempting to overtake another 122 –route bus that seemed to have caused this accident,” police sources said.

The injured are being treated at the Colombo South Teaching Hospital, Police Media Division sources said.
